Interactive whiteboards are the hot ticket item in K-12 education today.
They offer the promise of increasing student achievement through
positive effects on student engagement and motivation. However, as
Richard Clark has
shown us, the media
is not the method. Good teaching
provides relevant access to technology-based resources in the
context of standards-based instruction. Good teaching leads to increased
student achievement. Inclusion of technology does not necessarily
help teachers to achieve this goal. Current thought on learning theory
says that when good teaching uses a student-centered approach to
instruction then good learning is apt to occur. The use of an interactive
whiteboard with student-centered teaching methods and standards-based
curriculum is likely to increase student achievement.
